El año pasado tuve el honor de participar en FEIPOL como poeta y puedo decir que ha sido una de las experiencias más especiales de mi vida. Para mí, participar en este festival, fue mi primer contacto real con el mundo de la poesía. Y me hizo darme cuenta de que en realidad es un arma que yo necesito personalmente, como terapia expresiva. Pero que también es algo que el mundo necesita, porque la poesía dice lo que todos callan.

Objetivo
El objetivo de este festival es crear un cambio positivo en la comunidad del Sur de Texas, mientras se celebra la cultura y el arte Latinoamericano a través de la poesía. El festival es gratuito y abierto al público, y promete traer más de 30 poetas de Estados Unidos, México y otros países de Latinoamérica.

FEIPOL 2017
Este año se llevará a cabo el segundo Festival Internacional de Poesía Latinoamericana (FEIPOL), del 5-7 de octubre en la biblioteca pública de la ciudad de McAllen. El tema principal de este festival es la paz, pero siempre se mantiene presente el tema transversal de la frontera, de la migración, las lenguas en contacto y la solidaridad entre los Latinos. Cada año, se invitan a poetas de honor que son poetas reconocidos a nivel internacional por susobras. Este año, los poetas de honor serán Jorge Galán, Cristina Rivera Garza, Felipe Montes,Rigoberto González y Jorge Miguel Cocom Pech.

Inicios
La idea del festival surgió en el 2015 entre Gerald Padilla y Rossy Evelyn Lima, su esposa, reconocida poeta originaria de Veracruz, México, residente de Weslaco, Texas, ganadora del premio Gabriela Mistral en 2010 entre otros premios importantes. Los dos comentaban sobre la oleada de migrantes que venían buscando refugio de otros países y decidieron fundar una manera para hacer que todas esas personas se sintieran bienvenidas en tierras extranjeras.

Empezó como una idea, que años después se materializó en lo que hoy es FEIPOL. El día de hoy, el equipo organizador se conforma de 16 personas y muchos otros aliados. “Todos estamos unidos por esa pasión de darle una promoción cultural – no sólo literaria, sino también artística – a una zona donde realmente hay una necesidad de ello,” dijo Eréndira Santillana, editora y directora de registros.

Respuesta de la comunidad
La asistencia que se ha visto de parte de la comunidad ha sido una sorpresa para los organizadores. “Ha sido muy buena en cuanto a asistencia. Nos han ayudado mucho compartiendo nuestras noticias en redes sociales, también hemos recibido mucho apoyo en cuanto a participación. Todo esto nos trae mucha esperanza,” dijo Rossy Evelyn Lima de Padilla,co-fundadora y presidenta de FEIPOL.

Apoyo
La participación es gratuita, por lo tanto, la financiación del festival depende del apoyo en forma de donativos de particulares e instituciones patrocinadoras que desean fomentar la cultura en el sur de Texas y creen en esta misma misión, tales como la Casa de la Cultura de Reynosa hasta el Consulado Mexicano de McAllen. “Todo con la idea de que se pueda expandir a nivel mundial y crear más conciencia para una mejor humanidad”, expresa Charo Violante, directora de Relaciones Públicas de FEIPOL en Estados Unidos.

Categorías
Hay dos categorías: La primera es para adultos mayores de 18 años de Estados Unidos o cualquier país de Latinoamérica. En esta categoría se eligen a los participantes a través de un jurado externo al equipo organizador, compuesto de 3 poetas reconocidos a nivel internacional. La segunda categoría es para jóvenes de 15-17 años que estén cursando la preparatoria en Estados Unidos o México. Los poemas pueden ser en español o en inglés.

Antología
El festival no es un concurso, sino que junta todos los poemas seleccionados y se crea una antología, que celebra precisamente la poesía. La antología incluye los poemas de los participantes y algunos poemas de los poetas de honor y se da a conocer a través de eventos de lecturas de los poemas seleccionados en diferentes ciudades del Valle de Texas. También se han hecho esfuerzos por dar a conocer el festival en otros países, como en La Feria del Libro en La Habana, Cuba.

Invitación
Como participante activa de FEIPOL y como amante de la literatura, los invito a todos a asistir a este hermoso evento y a formar parte de la comunidad de FEIPOL. Es una oportunidad únicapara escuchar voces hermosas que tienen mucho que decir, para conocer más acerca de la
literatura, arte y cultura de nuestros países y también para crear un cambio positivo en nuestra región y ultimadamente nuestra sociedad.

International Festival of Latin American Poetry – FEIPOL
Latin Poets look for Ways to Foster Peace

Last year, I had the honor to be a part of FEIPOL as a poet and I can say that it has been one of the most special experiences of my life. For me, being a part of this festival was my first contact with the marvelous world of poetry. It made me realize that poetry is something that I need personally as a therapy to express myself. But, it is also something that the world needs, because poetry states what the world keeps silent.
Objective
This festival aims to create a positive change in the South Texas community, while celebrating Latin-American culture and art through poetry. This free and open to the public festival promises to feature more than 30 poets from the United States, Mexico and other Latin-American countries.
FEIPOL 2017
This year, the second International Festival of International Poetry will take place on Oct 5-7 at the McAllen Public Library. The main theme for this year’s festival is peace. But topics like immigration, languages in contact and solidarity amongst Latinos are always present. Poets recognized at the international level will be attending this year. This year the poets honored will be Jorge Galán, Cristina Rivera Garza, Felipe Montes, Rigoberto González and Jorge Miguel Cocom Pech.
Beginnings
The idea of this festival came in a conversation in 2015 between Gerald Padilla and his wife, Rossy Evelyn Lima, award winning poet native of Veracruz, México, and residents of Weslaco, Texas. She won the Gabriela Mistral award in 2010 among other prizes. They were both talking
about the wave of immigrants that came to the US looking for refuge from other countries. They decided to provide them a way in which they would feel welcome in foreign lands. It all started as an idea, that years later became FEIPOL. Today, the organizational team is composed of 16 people along with many other allies. “We are all united by the passion for cultural promotion – not only literary, but also artistic – in a region where there is great need of it,” said Eréndira Santillana, Registration Director and Editor.
Response from the Community
Attendance by the community has been a pleasant surprise. “It has been a great response in regards to attendance. Sharing our news in social media has helped us enormously. This brings lots of hope” said Rossy Evelyn Lima de Padilla, co-founder and president of FEIPOL.
Support
The participation in the festival is free and its funding depends on donations from private individuals and sponsorships from institutions that aim to foster culture in South Texas that believe in this same mission, such as Casa de Cultura from Reynosa and the Mexican Consulate in McAllen. “All these with the objective of expanding the festival to a world level and create greater awareness aimed at a better Humanity” says Charo Violante, FEIPOL Public Relations Director in United States.
Categories
There are two categories: one for adults above 18 years of age from the United States or any other country in Latin America. In this category participants are chosen by means of a jury, formed by 3 poets recognized at an international level. The second category is for 15-17 year old high school student participants from the United States or Mexico. The poems can be in Spanish or in English.
Anthology
This festival is not a contest. It gathers together all the selected poems and creates an anthology that celebrates poetry. The anthology includes the poems by the participants and some poems by the honored poets and is shared in reading events in various cities within the Rio Grande Valley. This festival is known in other countries, such as the Book Fair in Havana, Cuba.

As an active participant in FEIPOL and a lover of literature, I invite you all to attend this marvelous event and become a part of the FEIPOL community. It is an amazing opportunity to listen to beautiful voices that have much to say, to learn more about the literature, art, and the culture of our countries and also to create a positive change in our region and ultimately our society as a whole.
